Home Phone Service
What is babyTEL Home Phone service? The babyTEL Home Phone service is a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) based telephone service that uses the Internet for the transmission of voice traffic. A VoIP-enabled device is used to make and receive a VoIP call. The service offers calling plans to residential and home office users looking to benefits from the savings and great features available with VoIP.
What features are included? There are plenty of features included. Virtually all features one would expect with a traditional telephone service are included plus some advanced features only available through VoIP. See our Home Phone service page for more details.
Can I temporarily suspend my account while I’m travelling?Absolutely! Whether you’re planning on taking an extended summer vacation, or you like to fly south for the winter, we make it easy for you to hit the pause button on your service.
After a one-time setup fee of $10, the cost of a seasonal disconnect is just $5.95 per month. You’ll still have to pay for any extra, or Toll-Free, numbers associated with your account, as well as your device rental and 911 fees, but you won’t be charged for the numbers that are included in your account’s regular plan.
For safety and security reasons, 911 calls will continue to work during seasonal disconnect.
Once you’re back home, just head over to the babyTEL online portal to reactivate your service, or give us a call and we’ll take care of it for you. It couldn’t be easier!
Please note that at this time, seasonal disconnects are only available for residential accounts.
Do I need special equipment?Yes. You need to connect your telephone set to a telephone adapter. See the section on Phones & Adapters for more details.
Does babyTEL supply equipment that connects to its Home Phone service?Yes. We offer two models of telephone adapters. Both models connect to your existing router and let you connect a computer through them instead of the router. The wireless model allows you to connect additional computers wirelessly. We also offer ROAMbaby Desktop for your PC and a ROAMbaby app for your Apple iOS or Google Android device. For more details, see the section on Phones & Adapters.
Can I use multiple devices with my babyTEL Home Phone service?Yes. Access your babyTEL account online to enable the multiple device option. You get the flexibility of using your laptop, your smartphone or your home phone to make and receive calls on the same number.
Regardless of how many devices you use, you only pay a monthly fee of $4.95 when you enable the Multiple Device feature.
One benefit of connecting multiple devices that is worth noting here is that it gives you the ability to carry 2 simultaneous calls at the same time. This can be very useful when you want to make a call but someone else is on the phone!
Can I use babyTEL Home Phone lines to send and receive faxes?Yes. Sending faxes out over regular babyTEL Home Phone service lines is possible but delivery success rates will vary depending on Internet conditions. Internet delays and packet loss can have serious negative effect on fax completion rates. For those reasons babyTEL offers an electronic fax service specifically designed for home and business users with more that an occasional need for faxing. Users on the babyTEL Fax Plan can send and receive faxes via email.
If you just want to be able to receive the occasional fax and you don’t want to invest in a fax machine or a fax service, you can use your Home Phone babyTEL number by allow babyTEL to answer the call either by not answering yourself or putting your account in “do not disturb” mode. When babyTEL answers your calls it normally takes a voice message, however, if a fax tone is detected it will receive a fax. Both voice and fax messages received will be delivered to you as file attachments to an email.
Do I need a special Internet connection for the babyTEL Home Phone service? No. However, if you regularly download video or large amounts of data from the Internet while making calls you may experience audio quality issues. At least 32Kbps in bandwidth is needed per line in order to maintain good call quality. If using the line for fax or data transmission (financial transaction terminals, alarm systems, modems) then 90Kbps must be available. The reliability of data and DTMF transmission is totally dependent on the consistent quality of your Internet connection.
Does babyTEL recommend specific brands or types of hardware?babyTEL recommends using devices we support and list on the device selection page during sign-up. You may, however, for a small additional monthly fee, use a device that is not listed among those we support. Our services have been tested extensively in a variety of environments and with different other devices. Should you have any problems with the device you choose, please contact us for assistance.
What OS (operating system) does ROAMbaby Desktop support?Currently babyTEL provides a Windows version and a Mac version of ROAMbaby Desktop. If you have some other type of OS, you can download a supported Softphone from a number of other sources. To use a third party Softphone, select the ‘already own a device’ option’ when subscribing to a babyTEL plan or adding a device. We will provide you with the relevant configuration settings you need to setup your Softphone.
Does my computer need to be online to receive calls?Only if you are using your ROAMbaby Desktop! Your computer does not have to be online to receive a call on any telephone connected to a babyBOX.
How do I get the ROAMbaby Desktop? You can subscribe to a babyTEL package that includes ROAMbaby Desktop or you can add ROAMbaby Desktop as a second or third device on your account. Once you have ROAMbaby Desktop as a device on your account, you can download it from your babyTEL account portal by selecting “Account Plan” in the “Plan” section. If you do not have ROAMbaby Desktop as a device select “Add device”.
My babyBOX™ stopped working. What should I do?This could happen for a number of reasons. For example a power glitch or a temporary loss of Internet connectivity could leave the babyBOX or other networking equipment in a state where they are unable to recover.
Rebooting the affected equipment may restore your connection. Start by rebooting the babyBOX. If that does not solve the problem, a reboot of networking related equipment may be needed.
Rebooting the babyBOX
This may be necessary if you notice that the VoIP light on the babyBOX is off and you can’t make a babyBOX telephone call or if the Network light is off and you can’t surf the Internet from your computer which connects through the babyBOX. This may be due to an interconnecting cable having become disconnected or there might have been a power surge. So, first ensure that all the connections are secure. Then reboot the babyBOX, as follows.
- Unplug the power cable from the babyBOX.
- Wait 10 seconds, then plug the power cable back in.
- Wait 2 minutes for the babyBOX to boot up. When the lights on the babyBOX stop flickering and the VoIP light is on, it is ready for use.
- Pick up the receiver to confirm that there is a dial tone.
Rebooting other networking equipment
Thunderstorms, power outages and other sources of power surges can cause loss of synchronization and disruption of communication links. So, if you can’t make a call from your babyBOX telephone and/or can’t connect to the Internet, you may need to reboot your networking equipment. This consists of powering down, then powering up your equipment. You do NOT have to disconnect any of the interconnecting cables.
Power down each element in the order shown below then wait a few minutes and power them back up in the same order. To power off a device, turn its power switch off or unplug its power cable. When powering up, wait for each device to become ready before powering up the next one.
- Cable/DSL modem
- Router, if any
- Hub, if any
- Your computer
You should now be able to make a call using the babyBOX telephone or surf the Internet.
- Mobile Service
What is babyTEL Mobile service?
The babyTEL Mobile service is a fully featured telephone service enabled through the ROAMbaby app. The app allows users to make and receive calls via the babyTEL telephone network using their smartphone’s or tablet’s WiFi or 3G / 4G connection.
The ROAMbaby app is available for Apple iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch) and Android based smart phones and tablets.
The service helps users reduce their cellular minute use which can result in significant savings. babyTEL can recommend 3G / 4G data plans from major carriers that do not incur roaming or long-distance charges in Canada and the U.S. allowing you to call over 3G / 4G at a fraction of the cost of cellular calling.
The app is easy to use since it works just like the iPhone or Android phone interface and has all the same features.
What features are included? The babyTEL Mobile service comes complete with a full suite of calling features such as call forwarding, voicemail and 911, which can all be controlled and customized within the app. Virtually all features one would expect with a traditional telephone service are included plus some advanced features only available through VoIP.
Is the ROAMbaby plan right for me?
The ROAMbaby plan includes all the benefits of a home phone in your mobile phone: It includes 300 minutes of local and long distance calls in Canada and USA and unlimited free calls between babyTEL users all for $9.95 per month with no binding contract.
For those who want more, the ROAMbaby app is also available with our home phone plans giving you more plan options to choose from including unlimited calling plans and the ability to use the same number for the home and mobile service.
Will the ROAMbaby app work with a babyTEL home Service?Home and Mobile are complementary services and the ROAMbaby app can be added to any babyTEL home plan either at no cost on some plans or a small additional monthly charge on others. Both services can share the same telephone number.
How do I get a ROAMbaby app Service?
How does ROAMbaby help me reduce my cell bill?
You can avoid costly cell roaming charges while abroad by using the ROAMbaby app over WiFi. You can also greatly reduce your cell bill by using the ROAMbaby app to make long-distance calls at a fraction of the price charged by your cell provider.
Some users have also benefited by using the babyTEL Mobile service as a complete replacement for their home phone service. Also note that all calls between all babyTEL users are free no matter where they are in the world.
Various major carriers in Canada and U.S. now offer data plans that allow for free roaming. For people on the go across Canada or U.S. there are huge savings when calling over 3G / 4G with a data plan that does not incur data roaming charges.
Should I take a Data only cell plan or a plan that includes regular cell minutes?
For smartphones, we recommend a basic minutes + data package. There are times when you are not in a Wi-Fi zone and the 3G / 4G data networks are weak or not available. Calling through cellular may be your best choice in such a situation, which is why we recommend having a plan that gives you that option. You’ll still save big on most of your calls but you’ll also be fully backed up by the regular cell service.
For tablets, a data only plan is just fine. The tablet will likely be used in more stationary situations like the home, office, hotel or café where Wi-Fi or strong 3G/4G is available.
Do I need special equipment?Yes. The ROAMbaby app is currently available for Apple iOS devices (iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad) and Google Android devices (smartphones and tablets).
Is the ROAMbaby app free?Yes, the app is free but you need an active babyTEL account to use it. You can choose the ROAMbaby plan or one of the babyTEL home phone plans that suit you best. Keep in mind that when using a 3G or 4G connection 500 MB are required for every 400 minutes of calls.
How do I log into the app?To log into the app, you need to enter your 11-digit babyTEL number and your babyTEL account password. Note that if you don’t already have a babyTEL account you need to subscribe to a babyTEL plan before you can use the app.
Can I call anyone even if they don’t have the app?Yes. You can use the app to call anyone in the world on their regular phone number. The ROAMbaby plan includes 300 minutes of calls in Canada and USA. Excess minutes or other International call minutes cost pennies per minute to most locations.
Will all my cell calls be handled by the app?No, only calls made to your babyTEL number will be received on your app. Calls made to your cell number will still be handled by your cell.
What is the difference between “any-time” and “when-open” notifications?
To receive incoming calls, you need to enable one of two modes of notification. The “any-time” mode uses the carrier’s “push” notification service to wake up the app even when it is not running, while the “when-open” mode uses a babyTEL notification service that requires the app to be running.
If the app is running, you will be notified of incoming calls via the babyTEL notification service, even if you have enabled the “any-time” mode.
Both notification modes will ring your phone when an incoming call is received.
The advantage of the “any-time” mode is that you will be notified of incoming calls even if the app is not running so you will not miss a call if you forget to start the app after powering on the device and you can stop the app when not in use to conserver battery life.
The advantage of the “when-open” mode is that it does not depend on the carrier’s “push” notification service which can be delayed enough that it comes too late to pick up and you have to call back the missed caller.
If you do not which to be notified of incoming calls, you have the option to turn of notifications completely.
Can I change my feature settings directly from the app?Yes. Under “Account Settings” you will be able to manage features like Do Not Disturb, Call Forwarding and many others.
How do I minimize the amount of drain on the battery that this app exerts?Various factors contribute to battery drain but generally the amount of drain on the battery an app exerts is proportional to how much it uses the device. If you only use the ROAMbaby app to make calls and has turned off notifications of incoming calls, then there is no drain on the battery except during a call. If you want to receive incoming calls, you will have to turn notification on. When notification is turned on and you leave the app running, there will be some drain on the battery. There are two notification modes: “any-time” or “when open”. To best preserve the battery enable “any-time” notification and stop the app from running when not in use by using your Smartphone’s procedure for stopping a running app.
My app stopped working, what should I do?
Like all other apps, there may be times when you experience problems. These can be the result of issues with the OS, memory, network, device or the app itself. If the app is not working as it should try to stop it and start it again.
To stop an app on the iPhone, double click on the push button at the bottom of the phone. Four active apps will appear. Scroll the row to the right or left until the babyTEL icon is found. Now touch and hold the icon until a minus (–) appears in the left top corner of the icon. Select the minus to stop the app. The icon will then disappear. Click the push button twice to return to the normal interface.
To stop an app on Android, go to Settings, Manage Apps, Running Apps and scroll through the list until you find the ROAMbaby app. Select the ROAMbaby app then select Stop.
If unsure how to stop the app, power off the device then power it on again.
I answered an incoming call but there was no one on the line. Why?Sometimes an incoming call is missed, which means the caller has hung up or the call has been diverted to voicemail before you answered. This can happen if the push notification arrives late as a result of carrier delays. The missed call will be registered in ‘Recents’ and can be called back at any time.
What happens if I miss a call? When “any-time” notification is enabled or the app is running, missed calls are registered in “Recents” and can be called back at any time. If notifications are enabled only when the app is running and a call arrives when the app is not running it will be answered by voicemail or forwarded to another number if you have forwarding enabled. In this case the call will not appear in “Recents”.
How does voice quality compare to a regular cell call?Generally call quality is as good as cellular calling. Where the data link is marginal calls can get choppy or cut off similar to a regular cell call when the signal is weak.
Are there any Tips to get the most out of the app?
Place the ROAMbaby icon on your main display near where the native phone icon appears. You then have quick access to the app for making outgoing calls and will not have to search for it among less used apps.
Give out your babyTEL number instead of the cell number and call forward the babyTEL number to your cell number. This will assure that if there is no data connection or notifications are turned off you still get the call on the cellular.
You can also call forward your cell number to the babyTEL number on no answer. This allows you to select which calls you want to pickup on the cell and which to send through to the app.
This also allows you to send unanswered calls to the babyTEL voicemail service which delivers your messages via email instead of using the carrier’s answering service which does not typically provide unified messaging.
Where you have a solid Wi-Fi connection use the app instead of using up your cellular minutes.
Why should I download the app again after it successfully installed? You should download the app again when babyTEL announces a new version or if you have any reason to believe that the installed download is not working correctly.
